FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) – On Monday, the founder and executive director of Kids Gym in Siloam Springs was arrested.
“Cory Mayhew has therefore been arrested on two counts of sexual indecency with a child and one count of second degree sexual assault,” Benton County District Attorney Nathan Smith said.
While Smith says he can’t divulge more information than that, he says Benton County takes any accusation like this very seriously.
“Because children are the most vulnerable people in society, these positions carry a much greater sense of responsibility,” Smith says.
We reached out to Gina Mayhew, Cory’s wife, and she declined to comment on the situation.
The Arkansas and Benton County Children’s Advocacy Centers say such news is always troubling. There has been a significant increase in cases like this since the start of the pandemic.
“Cases at our center during COVID have increased by 60%, and we need to be aware and take action when something doesn’t look right or doesn’t feel right,” says CACA’s Elizabeth Pulley.
“Last year, our center alone saw over 900 children, so it’s something we know and care about all the time,” says Elisabeth Siebuhr of the Benton County Children’s Advocacy Center.
They say the best way to avoid such situations with your own children is to have difficult conversations with them now.
“Talking about body parts and consent and what type of contact is okay and what type of contact is not and educating kids about what kind of thing happens if that happens,” says Siebuhr.
Mayhew is currently being held in Benton County without bail and Smith is keen to point out that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
