PORTSMOUTH – Images from overseas travel by local photographers fill the Portsmouth Senior Activity Center on Cottage Street in Portsmouth in the new summer exhibition ‘Photos From Afar’ until October 14.
CPSC Art Committee members Diane Stradling and Mo O’Leary tell us, “As we all know, one of the results of the pandemic has been the widespread limitation of our ability to travel. We hope that both for those who have begun to travel and for those who are still waiting, these photographs will help satisfy our curiosity for distant places and be a way to enjoy them, at least vicariously.
Featured photographer Debra Woodward titled her exhibit “Travel Leaves Marks” in honor of the late Anthony Bourdain who said, “Travel isn’t always pretty. It’s not always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts; it even breaks your heart. But it is okay. Travel changes you; it should change you. It leaves traces in your memory, in your conscience, in your heart and in your body. You take something with you. I hope you leave something good behind. Debra has several of her photos up for sale here, including those from Provence, Tuscany and Mexico. “I miss traveling,” she says. “Hopefully things will become safer soon, both with the virus and with climate change causing such disastrous heat waves and their aftermath.”
Other photographers featured in this exhibition include Judy Arnold, Susan Sweetser Bank, Pat Kennedy Corlin, Robert Ortiz, Peter E. Randall, David Random, Bobbi Slavin, Dave Turbide, Carol Van Loon, and Corinne Kubelka Wood. Meet several of the artists at a reception on Thursday, July 28, from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
The PSCAC is located at 125 Cottage St., Portsmouth, just south of the roundabout. They are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Art exhibitions are organized by the PSAC Arts Committee. They put on four shows a year and each one lasts three months. Their goal is to champion the creativity and worth of older people by showcasing the artwork of those 50 and older.
